명장과 기능장은 모두 제과 분야에서 인정받는 숙련기능자격증입니다. 그러나 명장은 대통령이 직접 임명하는 명예직이며, 기능장은 해당 분야의 직업협회에서 인정해주는 자격증입니다. 

기능장은 해당 분야에서 최상급의 숙련기능을 가진 사람으로서 산업현장에서 작업 관리, 소속기능인력의 지도 및 감독, 현장훈련, 경영계층과 생산계층을 유기적으로 연계시켜 주는 현장관리 등의 업무를 수행할 수 있는 능력을 가진 사람입니다. 

반면, 명장은 해당 분야에서 뛰어난 업적을 세운 사람으로서, 대통령이 직접 임명해주는 명예직입니다. 명장에게는 연금이 지급되며, 해당 분야에서의 명성과 영예를 누릴 수 있습니다

비슷한 것 같지만, 많이 다른 직함이라는 생각이 듭니다.

명장은 명패에 대한민국 대통령 명칭을 사용할 수 있는 직함이다.

구글이나 파파고 등에서는 the master craftsman  과 the head of skill 이라는 말로 구분 되어진다.

한마디로 큰 차이가 있는 직책이다.
